Our History

The Bridgehampton Child Care Recreational Center was born out of tragedy in 1950 after a fire in a migrant camp killed two children of seasonal workers. The community came together to create The Center, which has served the children and families of the East End with educational and enrichment programs for the past seven decades.

Affirmation of Approach

At the Bridgehampton Child Care and Recreational Center, we are unwavering in our commitment to serving all marginalized children and families in our community. Our work extends beyond individual children to include their families and the broader community and environment that shapes their futures. Anything less would be a temporary solution—stopping the bleeding without addressing the root cause of the wound.

We recognize that early childhood education is the bedrock of lifelong learning and success. It is during these formative years that executive functioning skills, social-emotional learning, and language acquisition take shape. But for children to truly thrive, they need a strong and equitable foundation. That is why we are actively expanding our programs to meet the evolving needs of our community.

Our impact extends far beyond early childhood. As children transition into our school-age programming, they gain confidence, improve academically, and develop the skills needed to navigate adolescence. Our “littles” become “middles,” engaging in deeper academic exploration, personal growth, career readiness, and preparation for high school. With a 30% growth in enrollment this year, we continue to expand both in size and in the opportunities we provide.

From there, our “middles” evolve into our D.R.E.A.M. Teens—a program designed to cultivate self-esteem, leadership, and social awareness. The results speak for themselves: our D.R.E.A.M. Teens program has tripled in size, and every senior in the class of 2024 was accepted into college, earning over $400,000 in scholarships and financial aid.

Beyond education, we are committed to economic empowerment. Our workforce development strategy, Teach Me How to Fish (TMHTF), equips community members with the skills needed for sustainable careers. Whether they are recent graduates, longtime workers balancing multiple jobs, or individuals seeking new opportunities, TMHTF is paving pathways to upward economic mobility—and we are already seeing life-changing results.

Our holistic approach extends further. We provide critical social services, counseling, a food pantry, and English and Spanish language classes. We also offer recreational and cultural programming to ensure that our entire community has access to enrichment opportunities.

At the heart of our work is a belief in the limitless potential of our community. The talent is here—what we need are the opportunities to nurture it. At the Bridgehampton Child Care and Recreational Center, we are committed to creating those opportunities every single day.

Our Need

We are a vital human services provider for our entire community, doing everything we can to ensure our children, youth, and families have the resources and opportunities necessary to thrive. The Center needs to raise 80% of our funding privately each year to sustain our current programming, and we need to do more.

Please join us in supporting our community now.
